1 gallon paper-thin sliced cucumbers
6 onions, sliced thin
1/2 c. salt
Combine the above with lots of cracked ice in a very large container. Place a weight of some kind on top to keep the cucumbers submerged as the ice melts. Place in the refrigerator for 3 hours. Drain well making sure to remove leftover bits of ice. Pour the cucumbers into the solution made below.

4 c. sugar
4 c. vinegar
1/2 c. water
1-1/2 tsp. turmeric
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
2 T. mustard seed
1/2 tsp. celery seed
Mix previously listed chilled cucmbers into this syrup mixture. Place on low heat, stirring frequently with a wooden spoon and heat to a boil.
Pack in hot sterilized jars
