1 can mandarin oranges, drained (use juice as part of water later)
2-3 oz. pkg. orange Jello
2 C hot water 2 C cold water
chopped nuts
(1 c. mini marshmallows, if desired)
2-3 bananas, sliced
1 C orange juice
1/2 C sugar
2 TBSP flour
2 TBSP butter
2 TBSP Miracle Whip
1 egg, beaten
1 C Cool Whip

Make Jello. Cool in refrigerator. When starting to gel, add mandarin oranges, nuts and bananas (also marshmallows if using).
Heat orange juice with butter. Combine sugar, flour and egg. Add to hot liquid. Stir til thickened. Cool. Add Miracle Whip. Fold in Cool Whip. Spread over Jello mixture. Cool in refrigerator.

This was the salad for every Thanksgiving dinner, especially in Norene's later years. My favorite story about it is: One year Jenine and Steve (who didn't like nuts in it) came for Thanksgiving dinner. Norene prepared the salad and we were eating at the Allens. Norene sent the salad over...a big bowl and a little 1-serving bowl. We thought, "How nice of Mom. She made a little bowl to snack on before dinner." We had a few bites and didn't notice that there were no nuts in it. Then when everyone else came over, Mom asked where Steve's salad was. Finally, the light bulb came on!
