"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Directions:
Mix sugar and butter, working together until very light.
Add brandy, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon to sugar mixture and blend thoroughly. Separate egg yolks and whites and beat separately; add yolks first to the mixture and stir through, then mix in beaten whites.
Add sliced citron, floured currants, and cut raisins to batter.
Mix in flour about 1 cup at a time, alternating with the whole raisins, until all are mixed together.
Pour mixture into greased deep basin and bake in a moderate oven [325 degrees] for two hours. If fire is strong, the heat should be decreased the last hour. Take out of oven and let cool when done.
If desired frost cake.
