candied cherries

Directions:
This recipe is a favorite from the Betty Crocker Cooky Book, Golden Press. 1972

Heat oven to 400; Mix butter, sugar, egg, salt and flavoring thoroughly. Work in flour. If dough gets too warm, place for a couple of minutes in the freezer. Put dough, 1/4 at a time. into cookie press with your favorite shape. I like the star with the opening. I put 1/2 candied cherry in the middle.
Force dough through the press on ungreased sheet. Bake 6-9 minutes until set. Cookies should not brown! They will firm up when cool.

Personal Notes:
My Great Grandmother, Christine Elizabeth Sandburg Nelson Johnson (1860-1950) , came to the US in 1875 from Nora, Darlana, Sweden. My mother, Betty Johnson Ferris, always talked about her Grandmother around the holidays and was particularly proud of these spritz cookies that "Grandma Johnson" would make. Grandma had eight children, 5 with Mr Charles Nelson and the next 3 with Mr. Emil Per Johnson. This picture is about 1908 showing my Grandfather David Johnson, Great Grandfather Emil Per Johnson, Great Grandma Christine Johnson, and Uncle Elmore Elliot Johnson, in Ashland, Wisconsin.
