2 cups sugar
1 cup butter or margarine
4 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cream of tartar
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Stir together dry ingredients and slowly mix into sugar-butter mixture. Add vanilla. Add nuts, if desired. Chill.
Roll out dough onto flour-covered pastry cloth (or parchment paper). Cut with cookie cutter and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Preheat oven to 450º. Bake cookies at 450º for 1 minute, then turn oven down to 375º. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Bottom and side edges of cookies will be brown, but the tops will be light.
