1 c. boiling water
1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. white sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 egg beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. nuts

ICING
8 T. cream (carnation milk)
8 T. brown sugar
8 T. butter or margarine

Directions:
Directions:
Pour the 1 cup of boiling water over 1 cup chopped dates and baking soda. Let stand while mixing remaining ingredients.

Combine remaining ingredients and add to the date mixture. Bake at 350º for 35 minutes in a 9x13" pan.

To make icing, boil ingredients for three minutes and spread on cake while warm. Sprinkle with nuts and/or coconut.
