Ingredients:
3/4 c. sugar
1-1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. crisco or other solid shortening
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 egg
2 tsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Sift together flour, baking soda, salt.

Cut sugar and shortening together (use pastry cutter or 2 knives).

Mix egg, milk and vanilla together and then mix into sugar mixture (by hand, not with beaters).

Add dry ingredients and mix by hand.

Roll dough 1/16" thick (roll with floured rolling pin or sock-covered rolling pin) on floured surface.
Cut out with cookie cutters and remove with thin spatula onto cookie sheet.

If decorating before baking, brush cookies with milk or egg white (gives a light glaze effect) and sprinkle with colored sugars.

If icing, bake first and decorate when cookies are cool.

Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Cookies will be slightly soft when removed from oven. Cool on wire racks.

Personal Notes:
This recipe came from a neighbor of my parents in the early 1950s. It is still our favorite Christmas cookie recipe - the cookies are light and only very slightly chewy (more so if you roll the dough a bit thicker).
