1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. salt
2 1/4 c. flour
1 c. buttermilk
1 tbsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda

FROSTING:
3 tbsp. flour
1 c. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. milk
1 c. granulated sugar

Directions:
Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to the sugar mixture.
Mix baking soda and vinegar. Add salt and flour alternating with buttermilk, vanilla, baking soda and vinegar.
Don't beat just blend. Bake for 30 minutes at 350º.

FROSTING:
Cook flour and milk until thick. Cool. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until fluffy then add flour mixture.
Beat like whipped cream and spread on cake. Sprinkle with nuts or coconut.
