2 c. canned chunked tomatoes with juice
1 T. butter
1/2 tsp. sugar
salt and black pepper to taste
1 to 1 1/2 slices dry bread

Directions:
Directions:
Bring tomatoes, butter and seasonings to a simmer. Cut or tear bread into 1 inch cubes and stir gently into tomatoes. Heat through and serve.

I'm sure it started on the farm as a way to add substance to jars of canned tomatoes and use day-old bread. But even at our house in the city it was a favorite way to serve commercially canned tomatoes. I miss this dish from my childhood!
