2 gallons cucumbers, seeded peeled and sliced
2 cups lime to 8 1/2 quarts water

1 heaping tablespoon alum
1 small bottle red food coloring
1 cup vinegar
enough water to cover rings

SYRUP:
5 pounds sugar
8 cinnamon sticks
6 ounces red hots
2 cups vinegar
2 cups water

Directions:
Directions:
Put prepared cucumbers and lime mixture in a stone jar. Soak for 24 hours. Drain and rinse 6 times.
Next, place cucumbers in large pot, add mixture of alum, food coloring and vinegar, then add enough water to cover rings. Simmer for 2 hours. Drain and discard liquid.
Put the syrup ingredients in a pan and bring to a boil. Pour over rings and let stand overnight. Next morning drain the syrup into a pan, boil again, then pour over cucumbers again and let set over night. Next morning drain syrup into a pan, heat to a boil, then pour over rings that have been arranged in sterilized jars. Seal with sterilized lids.
