1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup butter, softened
2 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
Food coloring
Colored sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 350º. Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl, beat powdered sugar, butter, vanilla and egg until well blended. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Stir in flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; mix well. If desired, tint dough with a few drops of food coloring. Cover dough with plastic wrap. Refrigerate about 1 hr. or until firm.
Shape dough into 1" balls. Place 2" apart on prepared cookie sheets. Flatten with fork; sprinkle with colored sugar. Bake at 350º for 5-8 minutes or until set but not brown. DO NOT OVERBAKE. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets. Store loosely covered.
