Whole cucumbers
1 gal. water
1 c. salt
1 c. vinegar
2 tsp. powdered alum
Pickling solution:
5 c. sugar
2 c. vinegar
2 T. mixed spices

Directions:
Directions:
Wash and pack whole cucumbers in jars. Boil the water, salt, vinegar and alum; pour the hot mixture over the cucumbers and seal the jars. Let stand for at least 3 months.
After 3 months, pour off the liquid. Split and slice the cucumbers. Soak in cool water for 5 hours. Pickling solution: Heat together the sugar, vinegar and mixed spices until the sugar dissolves. This is enough to make approximately 2 quarts. Pour over the cucumbers and let set in refrigerator for at least 4 days. Then eat!
