1 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking powder
4 c. flour (approximate)
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
Filling:
1 lb. dates, ground
1/2 c. sugar
2/3 c. water
1 c. walnuts, finely chopped

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs, vanilla and beat. Add soda, salt, baking powder and about 2 cups flour sifted together. Add next 2 cups flour for soft dough. Roll out dough on floured surface.
Filling: Cook first 3 ingredients until thick. Cool and add nuts. Spread dough with date mixture. Roll as for jelly roll. Chill 4 hours or overnight. Slice rolls and bakeon a greased cookie sheet about 8 minutes at 350º. Makes about 80 to 100 cookies.

Mom used 1 cup white sugar and 1 cup brown sugar. She did not use baking powder.
