6 qts cucumbers. ( 3 to 4 " long)
1 tbsp alum
8 cups white sugar
2 cups salt ( pickling)
1 gallon boiling water
2 qts vinegar
3 tbsp mixed pickling spice in a bag

Directions:
Directions:
Wash and cut cucumbers in half. Cover with brine of salt and boiling water. Pour over cucumbers in crock.Let stand 4 days. On the 5th day,pour off brine,cover with boiling water.,let stand for a day. On the 6th day,dissolve alum in enough boiling water to cover cucumbers. Let stand for another day. On the 8th,9th and 10th days,drain and reheat syrup adding 2 cups of sugar each day. On the 11th day,heat syrup and pour over the cucumbers which have been put in jars or can leave in crock,covered. If left in crock,leave spices in bag. Add coloring if desired the first day syrup is put on pickles.
