2 c. bread crumbs (Zwieback)
1/2 c. butter
1 tbsp. sugar
2-1/2 c. tart applesauce
a little cinnamon (to taste)
whipped cream
currant jelly (red jelly)

Directions:
Directions:
In a cast-iron skillet melt butter, stir in crumbs, sugar and cinnamon. Carefully brown until toasted.

Spread and press half of crumbs onto a dessert plate or serving dish.

While crumbs are cooling, heat applesauce in a separate pan until quite warm. While applesauce is hot carefully layer half of it on top of crumbs, being careful not to mix crumbs and applesauce.

Make a second layer of crumbs and applesauce.

Chill.

Top with a layer of whipped cream and add small dollops of currant jelly along top edge of cake.
