1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
4 eggs
3 c. cake flour
1 tsp. soda
1/4 to 1/2 tsp salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 1/2 tsp. rum flavoring
1/2 tsp vanilla flavoring

Rum Sauce
1 c. sugar
2 T. brown sugar
1/2 c. water
1 1/2 tsp rum flavoring

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, add sugar to shortening gradually and cream well. Add eggs and blend well. Sift dry ingredients together. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Beat well after each addition. Add flavorings. Bake in a slightly greased and floured tube pan at 375ºF for 15 minutes, then decrease temperature to 350º F for 30 minutes. Let the cake remain in the pan for 5 minutes after removing from the oven.

Rum Sauce
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Heat the mixture until it boils, then remove from the heat immediately. Dip the sauce over the entire surface of the cake. Place cake in a covered box to allow the sauce to penetrate into the cake.
