1 gallon cucumbers (sliced)
some onions if you desire
salt to taste
1 Tbsp alum (powdered)

Directions:
Directions:
Wash cukes and slice thin. Slice onion thin. Salt cucumber. Let stand in alum and cracked ice for 3 hours (or overnight). Drain and make the following syrup:
5 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. tumeric
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
2 Tbsp. whole mustard seed
1 tsp. celery seed
5 c. vinegar
Put syrup in large kettle and bring to boil. Add drained cucumbers. Heat thoroughly (do not boil). Pack while hot in sterilized jars and seal. You will have some syrup left over.
