3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup molasses
2 tsp soda
1 tsp salt
3/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup hot water
2 tsp vanilla
4 cups flour,sifted

Filling -
1/2 cup water
1 pkg dates
1 cup sugar
1 tsp lemon extract
Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening then add molasses and vanilla.Dissolve soda in hot water and add alternately with flour and salt.Roll thin and cut with a cookie cutter.Spread 1/2 of cookie with filling.Place another cookie on top and press edges together. Bake in moderately hot oven for 5 to 7 minutes

Filling - cook until thick and let cool before using.
