"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 jar Karo Syrup
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 pinch cream of tartar or baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
1. Put all ingredients in a large skillet.
2. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
3. Over medium heat boil to string stage when dropped into cold water. (Caution: do not over cook or you won't be able to pull it)
4. Pour onto a greased cookie sheet.
5. Butter hands very well. Pull taffy as soon as you can handle it (2 minutes). Pull off a handful, pull hard and quickly - speed is important. Keep buttering hands. Pull until candy is white and no longer pliable.
6. Shape into a rope about 1/2 inch thick and place on another greased cookie sheet. When taffy is all pulled, cut into 1 inch lengths with buttered scissors. If it's too hard to cut (either due to over cooking or not enough fast pullers), crack into pieces.

Personal Notes:
Fun project for a large group of people. Don't try it alone - you have to be quick to get it all pulled before it cools. We had great fun doing this with our mom when we were kids.
