1/2 c. shortening
1-1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 T.cocoa
2 oz. red food coloring
2-1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. vinegar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together the shortening and sugar; add eggs and vanilla. Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa; add to sugar mixture along with the buttermilk. Sift together the flour and salt and blend with creamed mixture. Add the baking soda and vinegar and gently fold into batter. Pour into three 9 inch pans that have been lightly greased and floured. Bake for approximately 20 - 25 minutes in a pre-heated 350º oven. Cool and frost with Red Velvet Cake Frosting.
