2 c all-purpose flour
1/2 t salt
1/2 c shortening
1/2 c granulated sugar
1/2 t baking soda
1 egg yolk
1 t baking powder
1/2 molasses
1 t ground ginger
1 1/2 t cinnamon
currants
raisins
maraschino cherries
food coloring
colored sugars

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, sugars and molasses in large bowl. Beat until creamy. Add egg yolk and beat well. Blend in dry ingredients. Chill dough for about 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350 Roll out about 1/4 of dough at a time, approximately 1/8 inch thick on a floured surface. You can use currants for eyes and nose and raisins or silver bells for buttons. A tiny sliver of maraschino cherry for the mouth. Colored sugar may be sprinkled on and all can be done before baking. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
