2 sticks butter
1 lb. Brown sugar
1 C white corn syrup
dash of salt
1 (8oz) can of sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla
(You will also need a good candy thermometer and buttered parchment paper.)

Directions:
Directions:
Melt butter over medium heat in a large heavy saucepan, add sugar and salt, stir until blended. add corn syrup, stir until blended, add sweetened condensed milk, stir to blend then continue stirring until mixture boils. Boil and stir until mixture gets to a soft ball stage (250 degrees on candy thermometer). Remove from heat and add vanilla. Stir to combine and pour caramel into a 6x11 inch pan that has been lined with buttered parchment paper. Place pan in refrigerator. When completely cooled. (8 hrs or so) remove caramel from pan using edges of parchment paper. Put onto cutting board, remove parchment paper and cut into strips using pizza cutter. cut strips into pieces and wrap in candy wrappers or squares of wax paper. Enjoy or give as gifts. Makes about 5 dozen caramels.

You can also dip pretzel rods in this caramel and cover caramel covered rods with chocolate and nuts or brickle.
