(1/2) cup Shortening
(1/4) cup Brown Sugar
(1) egg, separated
(1/2) tsp Vanilla
(1) cup Flour
(1/4) tsp Salt
(3/4) cup finely chopped Nuts
Jar of good quality jam

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix shortening, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla thoroughly. Blend together flour and salt; stir in.
Roll dough into 1" balls. Beat egg white slightly with fork. Dip balls in egg white. Roll in nuts. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Make a depression on each cookie with your thumb (i.e. "thumbprint"). Fill each thumbprint with a small amount of jam.
