Directions:
Directions:
Add 4 cups pickling salt to 2 gallons of cold water and dissolve well Add enough sliced cucumbers to fill a 4 gallon container and cover with the brine. Weigh down. Soak in brine for 5 to 6 days. Take out of container and wash really well in cold water. Put back in container and cover with cold water. Add 3.8 to 4 oz alum, mix, weigh down and let set 2 nights. Pour out in sink and drain well. DO NOT wash. Put back in container and add 1 gallon of 5% red vinegar and weigh down and et set 1 night. Drain but do not wash. Put back in container as 1 layer of cucumbers and a layer of sugar till all are used and let last layer be sugar. Tie 1 large bottle of mixed pickling spices in cheesecloth and add to container. Stir every day as they make their juice and until sugar dissolves. You can then put in jars and put a lid on. No need to process.
