1/2 cup shortening
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs well beaten
1/2 cup boiling water
2 squares unsweetened cooking chocolate
1 1/2 cup flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup sour milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, brown sugar, boiling water and chocolate in a pan to melt the chocolate; beat eggs well and gradually add to chocolate mixture; add dry ingredients; mix well; add sour milk and vanilla mixing until well blended; pour into prepared greased pans and bake at 350º F for 25-30 minutes or until when touched in the middle the cake springs back or a toothpick comes out clean. Frost with a chocolate frosting; can add nuts to top.

This recipe was found in Grandma Clara Ready's handwriting; it did not have instructions with it so these instructions can be adjusted as to bake for a regular cake mix.
