1 (10 oz.) pkg. pitted dates
1/2 cup water
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 cup sugar
Crust:
1 1/2 cup quick cooking oats
1 1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup light brown sugar
5/8 cup butter

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 F.

Cut dates into pieces. Add water and cook until tender.
Add salt and sugar. Stir and cook until sugar is dissolved; Cool.

Put all remaining ingredients in a mixing bowl. Work the butter into the other ingredients with a pastry blender or fingers.Spread a little more than half of the mixture in a greased 8" pan. Press lightly.Spread the date mixture on top of the oat mixture.Cover with remaining oat mixture. Press lightly. Bake 25 minutes. When cool, cut in 25 square pieces.
