old bread, crumbled, to fill 3/4 casserole dish
1 stick butter
raisins (optional)
3 C sugar
10 eggs
4 tsp vanilla
3-4 C milk
nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Grease casserole dish. Crumble bread to fill dish loosely, 3/4 full. Cut butter into pats and arrange on bread. Sprinkle with raisins, if desired. Combine sugar, eggs, vanilla, and milk in bowl; pour over bread. Add additional milk if necessary to fill dish 3/4 full (almost cover bread). Sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake with pan of water under casserole dish at 325º, 1 1/2 hours, or until set.
