Mom's Sugar Cookies Recipe

1 ½ c confectioners sugar
1 c butter, softened
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract
2 ½ c sifted flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat Oven to 375º
Cream sugar and butter, then add eggs and flavorings. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Add this to the butter/sugar mixture until well mixed. Refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours. Divide dough in half. Using a well floured rolling pin, roll out half to 3/16”. Cut with cookie cutters (dipped in flour) Bake on ungreased sheet pan for 8 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Dip the cookies (topside down) in a plate of granulated sugar and place on racks to cool.
Optional: Pipe on colored icings instead of sipping in sugar..

Note: The secret to success with these cookies is flour ! Use lots to prevent sticking. Flour the work surface. the rolling pin, cookie cutters, etc.

These are the same sugar cookies that I have made over the years however, I can’t take credit for the recipe.It was "Mary’s" from The Joy of Cooking cookbook. I think it is the almond extract that sets this recipe apart from others..
