1# green split peas, uncooked
1 meaty ham bone - you can use a ham shank and ham steak
1 1/2 c sliced onion
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp marjoram
1 cup diced celery
1 cup diced carrots

Directions:
Directions:
Cover peas with 8 cups water and simmer for 2 min. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 1 hr. Add ham bone, onion, salt, pepper and marjoram. Bring to a boil. Simmer for 1 1/2 hrs, stirring occasionally. Remove bone; cut off meat and dice. Return meat to soup. Add carrots and celery. Cook slowly, uncovered, for 30-40 min.
