2 sq. baking chocolate, 1/3 c. shortening, 2 eggs, 1 c. sugar, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1/2 cup sifted flour, 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional).

Directions:

Melt butter and chocolate together over hot water. Stir to blend well and cool. Beat eggs, add sugar and vanilla and beat thoroughly. Stir in chocolate mixture. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and stir into chocolate mixture. Stir in nuts. Pour into 8 x 8 x 1 1/2 inch baking pan that has been greased and floured. Bake at 350º for 40 minutes. Recipe can be doubled and put into a 9 x 13 inch pan for 35 minutes.
