1 c. butter softened, 1 1/2 c. sifted confectioner's sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 egg, 2 1/2 c. sifted flour, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1 tsp. cream of tartar, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1 c. small gumdrops sliced (optional).

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter, confectioner's sugar and vanilla thoroughly. Beat in egg. Sift flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Gradually stir flour mixture into creamed mixture. Chill dough for one hour or longer. Place on lightly floured surface and roll dough to 1/4 inch. Cut with shaped cookie cutter. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet in 375º oven about 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool slightly before removing from cookie sheet. Snip gumdrops into small pieces and decorate cookie.
(OR you can make paste of 1 egg yolk and 2 tbsp. sugar and brush on cookies before baking.)
