2 level t. cocoa
1 oz. bottle red food coloring
Fill empty food coloring bottle with1 oz. water
1 t. soda
1 t. vinegar
1/2 c. Crisco
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 t. salt
1 t. vanilla
2 1/4 c. flour
1 c. milk
Frosting:
1 c.milk
3 t. flour
1 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 t. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Mix cocoa, water and red food coloring, set aside. Mix soda and vinegar, set aside. In a small bowl mix together Crisco, sugar, eggs, salt and vanilla. Put in large bowl. Beat in cocoa, water and food coloring. Mix soda/vinegar with milk. Mix together alternating with flour. Mix well. Place wax paper in bottom of 2 9 inch pans and grease bottom only. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
Frosting: Mix 1 c. milk and 3 t. flour. Cook until it coats the spoon and then cool until it gets COLD. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until fluffy and then add cooked flour and milk one spoonful at a time. Frost cake between layers and on top only and keep in refrigerator.

Be sure to cool the flour/milk mixture before you add the rest of the ingredients for the frosting.
This recipe came from Bernice Kaiser who was Irene Kaiser Mack's sister. The recipe cost Bernice $500 when $500 was a lot of money.
