2 cups milk, 3 eggs, 1/3 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 4 to six slices stale bread, 1 tsp cinnamon, dash nutmeg, 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Arrange bread slices with crusts removed in a 9X13 greased pan. Spread raisins or if you prefer, dried cranberries over the bread. You can also spread a cup of finely chopped apple if desired. Heat milk over a low heat until hot but not boiling. Combine eggs, sugar and salt and mix well. Gradually stir 1/4 of the hot milk into the egg mixture, mixing well. Add remaining milk slowly, stirring constantly. Pour milk and egg mixture over the bread, raisins, and apple. Combine cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle over the top. Bake uncovered at 300 degrees for 50 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream or tinned cream.

This was a cheap dessert for a large family. The ingredients are staple foods that were always available years ago when people could afford little more.
