Cake
½ cup shortening 2 oz red food coloring (2 bottles)
1 ½ cups sugar 2 ½ cups sifted flour
1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp salt
2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk
2 tbsp. cocoa 1 tbsp white vinegar
1 tsp soda
Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla together. Add eggs 1 at a time and beat together. Make a paste of the cocoa and the red food coloring and add to the sugar mixture. Sift together flour and salt. Add flour, salt and buttermilk to the mixture. Add the vinegar and soda. Pour into two 8” layer pans that have been greased and floured. Bake approx. 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool completely before icing

Icing
5 tbsp flour 1 cup sugar
1 cup milk (regular) 1 tsp vanilla
2 sticks softened butter

Beat butter, sugar and vanilla until creamy. Gradually add flour and milk. Cook over medium heat until thick~ Stir constantly. Beat until thick enough to spread. Cool before icing the cake.
