l lb split green peas
1/2 c barley
8-10 cups water
2 onions
2 carrots sliced
2 celery stalks sliced
1 green, yellow or red pepper
2 bay leaves
l t celery seed (optional)
1 t basil
1 t thyme
3-4 cloves garlic (I use 5-6)

Directions:
Directions:
Place peas, barley, onion, garlic cloves, bay leaves & celery seed in large soup pot w/ 8 cups of water.
Cook over low heat, covered, about 1-1/2 hours.
Add remaining vegetables & seasonings and cook about 30-45 minutes longer or until vergies are just tender crisp
Add more water if necessary.

Crush the soft garlic cloves when finished.

I add to most of my soups whatever greens are on hand, chopped fine.
Rice, potatos or any kind of noodles may be substituted for the barley.
