1/2 cup unsalted butter, 11/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup lightly packed brown sugar, 11/2 tsp ginger, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/8 tsp black pepper, 1/8 tsp cloves, 1/2 cup water,1/2 cup molasses, 1 large egg lightly beaten, 2 ocnces bittersweet chocolate (melted)

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter an 8 inch square pan. In a bowl combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper, ginger, and cloves. Melt the butter in the water in a saucepan over medium heat and stir into the dry ingredients until smooth. Stir in molasses and beaten egg. Pour half the batter into the prepared pan, Drizzle half the melted chocolate over the batter. Pour remaining batter on top and drizzle the remaining chocolate over the batter in a decorative pattern. Bake for 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
