1/2 c brown sugar (packed)
1/2 c butter
1/2 tsp salt
2 eggs beaten slightly
2 1/2 c cake flour
1 tsp cinnamon and allspice
1/2 cloves and nutmeg
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp soda
1 c buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together brown sugar & shortening. Add salt, eggs. Add scalding cream. Sift together flour, cinnamon, allspice, cloves and nutmeg, soda and powder. Add mixture alternatively wth 1 cup buttermilk and flour mixture. Finish with the flour mixture. Bake at 375 º in two greased and floured 9" pans for 25 mins.

Icing for the cake:
For the icing: Cream together 1 lb confectioners sugar and 1/2 stick butter (softened.) Add 1/4 tsp salt, 3 T scalding cream and enough very hot strong coffee to make spreadable consistency. Add 1/2 c chopped raisins for the middle of the cake if desired.

Sometimes I make double the recipe since most people like more frosting.
