- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 cup flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 4 tbsp. cocoa, heaping
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 tsp. baking soda, level
- 1 cup hot water
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- Whipped cream to taste

Directions:

- In large bowl cream sugar and shortening, then add eggs, and beat together.
- Mix flour, salt, baking powder, cocoa and add alternately with sour cream.
- Save 1/2 cup of the flour mixture and add to the baking soda.
- Mix and add the hot water.
- Mix until smooth.
- Add vanilla.
- Combine with other ingredients and add to floured 9x13" pan or 2 8x8" pans.
- Bake at 350F for 35 minutes.
- Let cool and serve plain or topped with whipped cream
