1 C raisins
1 C chopped nuts
1/2 C shortening
1 C sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp clove
1 beaten egg
1 tsp soda
2 C flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 C water

Directions:
Directions:
Boil raisins in water for 10 minutes & drain but retain water. Dissolve soda in the raisin water. Cream shortening & sugar, beat in egg & Vanilla. Add flour and remaining dry ingredients along with raisins. Stir. Pour in to greased loaf pan and bake at 275º for 75 minutes.

Sometimes Grama added 3/4 c candied fruit and 1/2 c molasses for fruit cake. Seems like Grama always had some of this in her bread box
