5 c. flour
1 2/3 tbsp. yeast
1 tbsp. sugar
2 c. warm water
2 tbsp. shortening
1 tbsp. salt

Directions:
Directions:
MIx the flour and salt together and set aside.
Gently mix the water and yeast together in a separate bowl and let it begin to work. Finally,
cream the sugar and shortening together and
add all the above ingredients to this mixture.
Let rise in a warm place until double (1- 1 1/2 hrs).
Braid or form into desired shapes. Bake at 350º for 25 - 35 minutes. To make crust crunchy and shiny, beat an egg white and cold water together and brush onto the baked bread. Put back into the
hot oven for a few minutes to allow the coating to harden. Serve with butter and/or garlic butter.
