1 lb. butter
1 lb. brown sugar
12 eggs, white and yolks
1 c. molasses
4 c. flour
1 lb. currants
2 lbs. raisins
1 lb. figs
3/4 lb. citron
2 lbs. seeded raisins
2 pkgs dates
1/2 c. candied lemon peel
1/2 c. candid orange peel
1 lb. candied cherries
1 lb. candied pineapple
4 tsp. allspice
4 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp.mace
1 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. fruit juice
Scant 1/2 tsp. soda dissolved in T. warm water
1 lb. chopped blanched almonds

Before beginning to make the cake, prepare the fruit. Cut raisins in two with scissors. Share citron, orange and lemon peel into thin strips. Also cut figs and dates in small pieces and dredge all with flour. Sift together flour and spices.
Cream butter, add sugar and cream,again. Add yolks of eggs. Stir in molasses, then fruit juice. Add beaten egg whites. Then flour, mixed with spices. Then add fruit, dredged with flour. Last, add dissolved soda. An excellent method to thoroughly cook such a large, rich cake is steam it for an hour, and then leave it in a fireless cooker overnight, or cook in show oven at 200 degrees F.
