2 gallons cucumbers (small size), cut in small pieces lengthwise
1 gallon boiling water
1 pint salt
boiling water
lump of alum size of a walnut (or 2 T. dissolved)
2 qts. of vinegar
8 lbs. sugar
hand full of mixed spices

Directions:
Cut cukes in small pieces lengthwise. Mix boiling water and 1 pint salt. Pour over pickles in stone jar. Let stand 1 week. Drain off alum water. Take 2 qts. vinegar, 8 lbs of sugar, and spices; bring to a boil; pour over pickles. Repeat this procedure for 4 mornings. Day 5, bring vinegar to a boil. Pack pickles in jar. Pour vinegar over pickles and seal.

Gladys' granddaughter, Teresa Sands, said she always loved to smell the aroma of these pickles when her grandmother was canning them. This recipe is often called "13 Day Pickles". I use the pickle juice to put in my potato salad and deviled eggs instead of using vinegar. Joyce
