3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 tsp soda
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp ginger
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Directions:
Melt the shortening in a three or 4qt. saucepan over a low heat. Remove from heat and let cool.. When cool add the sugar, molasses and egg and beat well. sift together the flour, baking soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt and add to the first mixture. Mix well again. chill until cold enough to handle easily. Form into one inch balls, roll in granulated sugar and place on a greased cookie sheet two inches apart. Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 375º.
