6 Tbsp. water
6 Tbsp. salt
6 Tbsp. bluing
1 Tbsp. ammonia

Mix ingredients. Place pieces of coal or stones in a clear glass bowl. Pour solution over coal. To obtain colored growth, add food coloring to the mixture. Grows best where it is warm and dry. To keep it growing, add more of the liquid at the side of the garden.

As a babysitting grandmother, I was always hunting for new ideas to keep my grandchildren busy. I got the coal garden recipe from the Amish cookbook. I remember my mother making this when I was a child 50+ years ago.
