Filling: Mix 3 c. raisins or craisins, 1/4 c. sugar, and 1-1/2 c. water in saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened (about 10 minutes). Cool before using.

3/4 c. shortening; 1 c. packed brown sugar; 1-3/4 c. flour; 1/2 tsp. soda; 1 tsp. salt; 1-1/2 c. quick rolled oats.

Be sure to prepare filling and let it cool. Heat oven to 400º. Mix shortening and sugar thoroughly. Stir together flour, soda, and salt; blend with sugar mix. Add rolled oats. Press and flatten 1/2 mixture over the bottom of greased oblong pan 13 x 9 inch. Spread with cooled filling. Top with remaining crumb mixture and pat down lightly. Bake 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned. While warm cut into bars and remove from pan. Cool as long as you can stand it before you have to dig in and have one.

If you like dates, you can cut up dates to equal 3 cups in place of raisins or craisins.
