"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

My dad would bring wild animals home. My first animal was a chipmunk, it stayed in my shoes. It didn't stay long and it left.
He would bring home an opossum with babies in her pouch. We kept them in a cage. He brought home a coon, built it a cage, and kept it in there.
We had pigeons, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, a goat, cats, and dogs.
We built shanties in the backyard, dulled daddy's handsaws from hitting nails in used lumber, mashed a few thumbnails in the process.
I almost forgot Marlene's groundhog.
I remember helping Dad kill opossum for supper, he would put a broom handle across its neck and I would stand on each side of the stick. Dad would yank up real fast and break its neck. Dad would skin it and clean it for supper.
Dad had honey bees. When he robbed their hive he would light a cigarette, hold it to his lips and blow smoke to calm down the bees.
