Directions:Filling:
Take 2 pkgs. of figs with stems removed. Add 3/4 cup of water and boil for 10 mins. Grind up figs & add grated orange skins, honey, 1/2 cup marmalade & walnuts to the fig mixture. Pepper to taste add water as needed. Refrigerate the fig mixture until cool.
Dough:
Dissolve 1 cup of sugar into 3/4 cup of cold water. Cut 1 cup of Crisco into 4 cups of flour. Add sugar water and up to 1 /2 cup of flour as needed. Gather together loaf and let it rest in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours. Preheat oven to 350º. Take small sections of dough so you don't over work it. Cut the sections into 1 1/2 inch pieces, place on a floured surface, and work with fingers until smooth. Roll flat into oval shape. Take a spoon and put fig mixture length wise in center. Close around fig mixture by pinching dough together into a cigar shape. Flip over to put the seam on bottom and flatten slightly. To design cookie shape, make three small cuts about 1/8 inch deep and one cut about 1/4 inch deep on the one edge of one end. Lightly press the dough between the small cuts so a small ridge is formed between the cuts. Spread the dough of the larger cut so the cookie begins to form a cresent. Continue this until the entire edge has ridges and the cookie forms a full cresent. Place on an un-greased cookie sheet and bake at 350º for 35 mins. on top rack until golden brown. |

Notes: Grandma Lo Piccolo recipe Grandma started to cook these cookies when she was twelve years old with her mother. They would sit across from each other with the wood cutting boards in their laps and make each cookie with love for the holidays. A great family recipe and tradition to this day.
