1/2 c. lard
1 lb. dark brown sugar
5 eggs
4 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 T. cinnamon

Directions:
Directions:
Stir and cream lard and dark brown sugar. Then add eggs. Stir and add flour, baking powder, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Mix until smooth.

Drop by teaspoons of dough about 1/2 inch apart on lightly greased cookie sheet and press a half pecan or walnut in the center of the dough. Bake at 325º approximately 15 - 20 minutes. Remove and place on cooling rack until cool.

Recipe is from my grandmother Rosa Leitner Klar who was born in Reid, Austria in 1879, arriving in the USA in the early 1890's. It is believed the recipe came from a German friend in this country.
