Directions:Kuchens are cakes mad with a basic batter that is topped with slices of fresh, juicy fruit.
1. Heat the over to 400 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9-inch-square baking pan and set aside.
2. In a medium size bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. With a pastry blender, whisk, or 2 knives, cut in 3 tablespoons butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. In a cup or small bowl, beat together the milk, egg, and vanilla. Stir the milk mixture into the flour mixture just until moistened. Spread the batter evenly in the bottom of the prepared pan. Arrange the apple slices in rows, slightly overlapping, over the batter. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil.
4. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake 10-15 minutes longer, until the apples are tender. A cake tester inserted in the center will come out clean. Cool the cake in the pan on a wire rack for about 10 minutes.
5. Meanwhile, in a 1 quart saucepan, heat the jelly, the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter, the brown sugar, and cinnamon to boiling. Brush the syrup over the apples. Cut the kuchen into squares and serve warm. |
