Pour 1 1/2 cups of boiling water over 1 cup of oatmeal.
1/2 c. shortening 1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar 2 eggs
1 1/2 c. flour 1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon

TOPPING:
6 tbsp. butter 1 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. milk 1 c. coconut
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugars add eggs. Add oatmeal, then the flour, soda, and cinnamon and stir well. Bake at 375º for 40 minutes and let cool. Make topping while baking cake and put on while cake is still warm. To make the topping, bring butter, sugar, and milk to a boil. Take from heat and add coconut and nuts. Spread on cake and put back in oven for 5 minutes.

Edie: I think this recipe came from my mom and/or grandma.
Georgie: This is my favorite cake! I add about 1/2 c. more oats to the recipe, I also double the coconut and cream in the topping. The evaporated milk is handy to use but I also think it tastes better in this recipe.
